Actives Layering 201
How to combine niacinamide, retinal, vitamin C, and acids in one week without fighting your own routine.
01The Compatibility Map
9 minFriends, strangers, enemies
Most "never combine" advice is folklore. The real map has three zones:
- Friends — niacinamide with almost anything; ceramides with everything
- Strangers — vitamin C (L-ascorbic) and retinoids: stable together in one formula is hard, so split them AM/PM rather than fight chemistry
- Enemies — benzoyl peroxide with retinal in the same layer: oxidize each other
The simplest safe architecture: antioxidants by day, retinoids by night, acids on their own nights.
02Same Night or Alternate Nights?
7 minThe decision rule
If a combination leaves your skin flushed, flaking, or stinging by day three, it is too much — regardless of what the internet says.
- Tolerant skin: retinal one night, AHA the next, recovery in between
- Most skin: alternate-night actives with a recovery night after each
- Sensitive skin: one active, maximum, twice weekly
Retinal pairs gracefully with niacinamide in the same PM routine — the niacinamide calms while the retinal works.
03Reading Your Skin's Feedback
6 minThe three-signal check
Every morning, ask:
- Tightness after cleansing that lasts past minute five
- Visible flaking around the mouth or jaw
- Burning when you apply products that used to feel neutral
Two or three yeses = drop to recovery nights until the signals clear. One yes = keep the schedule, add a barrier serum. Zero = you can consider intensifying.
This loop — apply, observe, adjust — is the actual skill of layering.
