What occlusives do
Water loss through skin (see TEWL) is constant. Occlusives lay down a hydrophobic film that physically slows that evaporation — the most direct way to keep skin hydrated overnight or in dry environments.
Common occlusives
- Petrolatum — the most effective occlusive known, reducing TEWL by over 95% in classic measurements
- Dimethicone — a silicone that seals while staying breathable and non-greasy
- Waxes and plant butters — moderate occlusion with richer skin feel
- Ceramide-containing balms — seal while replenishing barrier lipids
When to use them
Occlusives shine as the last step of a PM routine, over slightly damp skin. On oily or acne-prone skin, a thin layer or a lighter silicone-based option avoids the heavy feel.
