Skin Barrier Function

What the skin barrier is, why it matters, and how to tell when it's compromised.

Skin Barrier Function beauty glossary visual

What is the skin barrier?

The skin barrier (stratum corneum) is the outermost layer of your skin. Think of it as a brick wall: the corneocytes (dead skin cells) are the bricks, and the lipid matrix (ceramides, cholesterol, free fatty acids) is the mortar.

Its job is simple but critical: keep water in, keep irritants out.

Signs of a compromised barrier

  • Tightness or stinging after applying products
  • Redness, especially around the nose and cheeks
  • Flaking or peeling
  • Products that never stung before suddenly stinging
  • Skin that looks "dull" despite exfoliation

How to repair it

  1. Stop exfoliating. Pause acids and retinoids for 2-4 weeks.
  2. Simplify. Cleanse, moisturize, protect. Nothing else.
  3. Use barrier-repair ingredients. Ceramides (3:1:1 ratio), niacinamide (5%), panthenol.
  4. Be patient. Most barriers recover in 2-4 weeks.

Coyglow Barrier Repair Serum is formulated at the 3:1:1 ceramide ratio with 5% niacinamide to support barrier recovery.
